Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) refers to a set of technology-based solutions designed to improve the quality of life for older adults and people with disabilities. The term literally means “life assisted by smart environments” and defines a growing sector at the intersection of ICT, home automation, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence (AI).

AAL has a twofold goal: on one hand, it promotes individual autonomy by enabling vulnerable people to live safely and independently in their own homes for longer; on the other, it provides support tools for caregivers, doctors, nurses, and healthcare facilities, helping reduce the care burden while increasing the efficiency of interventions.

AAL areas of application

AAL solutions can be applied across several areas:

European AAL Projects

The European Union (EU) has made significant investments in the AAL sector through dedicated funding initiatives such as the AAL Programme, co-financed under Horizon 2020. Here are some key reference projects:

1. PAAL – Personalized Ambient Assisted Living

The PAAL project created a digital ecosystem that includes an online platform for caregivers, environmental sensors, and wearable devices for assisted individuals. This setup enables personalized care and seamless communication with family members and healthcare professionals.

2. INCARE

INCARE aims to integrate AAL technologies into a hybrid care system, combining digital tools with in-home human support. It brought together several European countries to test scalable models for active aging.

3. NESTORE

NESTORE developed a customizable virtual coach designed to support users in physical, mental, and social wellbeing through smart sensors and an interactive mobile app.

Why launch a project in the AAL sector

The aging of the Italian and European population presents a major societal challenge. According to Eurostat, by 2050, more than 30% of Europe’s population will be over the age of 65. In this context, AAL technologies will no longer be a niche innovation—they will represent a strategic market for businesses, research institutions, and public administrations.
